6Hollywood’s Once and Future Classic: Why it took 54 Years to Turn “A Wrinkle in Time” into a Movie. First, it is still one of the most frequently banned American books along with Catcher in the Rye. The second reason was perhaps a casting issue. “‘I wasn’t just casting for actresses. I was casting for leaders — icons,’ Film Director DuVernay says of choosing Mindy Kaling, Oprah Winfrey, and Reese Witherspoon to play Mrs. Who, Mrs. Which, and Mrs. Whatsit, respectively.” Candidly, the reviews for this film are okay, not great. Though I still think it is worth noting given the effort it took to make, and that it is a $100 million sci-fi film made by an African American female director. It is time to step into the fifth dimension, to go way outside the rules of time and space.
7Box of Butterflies. Congratulations to my friend! Actress, Producer, now Author, Roma Downey launches a new book and web series that shares a collection of touching and personal stories, offering encouragement and hope. “Whether it’s finding purpose out of pain, the importance of everyday kindness or embracing each moment as it comes.” The message: be a blessing both in your own life as well as in someone else’s.
8Talk Like TED: The 9 Public-Speaking Secrets of the World’s Top Minds. If you love TED Talks as much as I do, and public speaking is something you aspire to do, then check out this book from public speaking coach Carmine Gallo. The author breaks down and gives you a step-by-step path to creating great presentations. I think what it really comes down to is good storytelling.
I wrote “Reaching for the Moon”
because I wanted to tell kids that all of us have a moon,
a dream, that we can strive for. Even if you don’t attain it,
you can at least try.
